Dianthus armeria, June 29 , 2026

We continued weeding the youngest trees up at Finley Lane. We also cut out more fire blight on a number of the older trees. There are fire blight strikes throughout the orchard though, so far, knock on wood, it seems manageable.

The low-growing herbaceous Deptford Pinks aka Mountain Pinks (Dianthus armeria) are now flowering. They have small five-petaled soft-pink blooms. They’re scattered here and there in clusters throughout the orchard. The flowers are always worth a close examination. With their tiny red ring and white dots surrounding the center, they are absolutely amazing. We just call them “Pinks.”
