Melrose

Melrose is a Jonathan x Delicious cross made in about 1927 by Dr. Freeman S. Howlett of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station. It was introduced in 1944. The fruit somewhat resembles Jonathan in both color and shape.

Despite its unremarkable parentage, it has become a favorite with some dessert apple connoisseurs. John first learned about Melrose through "Apple Source," a mail-order business that would send you apples through the mail.  It was a great way to taste unfamiliar varieties long before Out on a Limb CSA. Although it is unusual to find it growing in Maine orchards, Melrose is very popular in Ohio where it has been declared the state apple.

Keeps very well.
