Kathy Olmstead

Kathy Olmstead is a Wealthy-Duchess look-alike.  It is excellent in pies and sauce and most other cooking.  It ripens in early-mid-fall and does not keep.

Although the apple has never been DNA finger-printed, we suspect that it is actually the historic Minnesota variety, Wealthy.  John found the ancient tree in the front yard of a old Swedish property up in Aroostook County on the Westmanland Road in Westmanland, Maine.  The property belongs to Kathy Olmstead.  Although we could probably call it Wealthy and no one would complain, we love this particular selection and have grown it as "Kathy Olmstead" for the past 25 years.
