strawberry norman
Strawberry Norman is a rare, heirloom, English, bittersweet cider apple that originated in Herefordshire. Although it was documented to be in the US in the mid-twentieth century, it currently may be available in the US only through SCF. The fruit is small, roundish, red-striped, spongy, sweet and “mawkish.” (Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language, 1957, defines mawkish as “nauseating, sickening, having a sickly, insipid flavor.” Wow, that’s my type of cider apple!) We imported our scionwood in collaboration with UK apple historian John Teiser and the USDA APHIS program.
