Koidu Reinette
Koidu Reinette was developed by J. Lange in the Tartu region of Estonia. It is one of the several apples and pears imported through the USDA APHIS program by Raivo Vihman in the early 2000’s. Because Raivo did not have an orchard at the time that the scionwood was released by APHIS, it was sent to Super Chilly Farm. It has done well here.
The fruit is medium-sized, roundish oblate and mostly yellow with a pinkish blush. Flesh is white and slightly granular; the flavor is tart, lemony, light and bright. We think that the flavors express themselves better when cooked, especially if you go easy on the spices. The crisp we made was delicious in flavor and soft in texture. The sauce is light-colored, yellowish-tan, mild but tangy, and creamy-textured.
The fruit matures in September in Estonia and late August to early September in central Maine. Bloom time is average to early. The blooms are large and pinkish-white. This is a good apple worth growing.
